Directed by filmmaker and LGBTQ+ activist Xiaogang Wei, the documentary follows Jessica, a professional drag performer who performs from her own home for an online audience. In a country where physical spaces for drag performances are heavily restricted, Jessica constantly searches for alternative ways to maintain visibility and express herself, persevering despite prejudice and discrimination.
With China PK Queen, Xiaogang Wei delivers an incredibly personal insight into the everyday life of a drag performer in contemporary China. The film serves as a powerful thematic extension of the photography exhibition, perfectly underscoring the mission of the In-Between Kings & Queens Foundation: to reveal the complete human being behind the performance and to hold space for stories that are too often left untold.
