In-Between Kings & Queens: New Drag Portraits from China to Debut at World Pride Amsterdam
Uncle Wang / Shanghai, China
During World Pride Amsterdam, the Oude Lutherse Kerk will host the photography exhibition In-Between Kings & Queens. For this special edition, the exhibition has been expanded to feature a powerful, brand-new series of portraits recently captured in China.
Through intimate portraits spanning multiple countries, In-Between Kings & Queens brings the international drag community into focus. Each photographic series is co-created in close collaboration with the participants, reflecting the unique cultural and social landscapes they navigate. The newly added portraits from China mark the project's latest and most intimate chapter.
Two Sides of One Story
Every piece in the exhibition uniquely displays the same individual twice: once in drag and once out of drag, beautifully merged into a single image. Rather than portraying two separate identities, the portraits capture one complete, multi-faceted human being.
These are not merely snapshots of a stage performance, but carefully composed works of art developed alongside the subjects. For many of the participants, this project marks the very first time both sides of their identity have been visibly celebrated side-by-side with equal weight.
Beyond the Performance
The exhibition is a proud partner event of World Pride Amsterdam. At a time when LGBTQIA+ communities face growing pressures worldwide, In-Between Kings & Queens invites viewers to look past surface-level stereotypes and connect with the real people behind the performances.
